Hatchy and Coconut are shown to be stranded on an island after their boat crashed. As his partner searches for food in the jungle, Hatchy sees a ship in the distance. He calls out for its attention. The ship comes closer and reveals to be captained by Scurvy. He takes off with Hatchy on board, unknowingly abandoning Coconut.
Hatchy is thrilled to be saved, but his opinion changes when Scurvy forces him to scrape barnacles off the bottom of his ship, followed by other menial chores. As he swabs the deck, he stops in front of a door to overhear Scurvy's plans. The pirate iguana apparently wants to make a meal out of him and use his eggshell as a bowl. Distraught by this discovery, Hatchy looks for somewhere to hide, ultimately choosing a cannon.
Ahoy is in the crow's nest and spots Russell's ship with his telescope. He tells Scurvy about the find, leading them to fire cannon balls at the other ship. Russell retaliates with his own cannons. His first mate Lumpy, however, is too busy trying to crack a soft-boiled egg. The ship takes a hit, causing the hot yolk to splash into his eyes, rendering him blind.
Back on Scurvy's ship, Scurvy fires the cannon with Hatchy inside. Hatchy is sent flying onto Russell's ship, where Lumpy cracks open Hatchy's eggshell and head, eating his brains thinking it is a soft-boiled egg. Lumpy gets eggshell shards piercing his mouth as he chews it down.
Russell delivers the finishing blow to the enemy ship. Scurvy jumps off, but winds up in the engine of a motorboat with Quacks and a recently rescued Coconut on board. Russell wants to celebrate his victory with a meal, and Lumpy suggests sharing the "egg" he's eating, disgusting him.
Deaths[]
- Hatchy's head is cracked open by Lumpy.
- Scurvy is shredded by a motorboat engine.
- Ahoy likely drowned or was hit by a cannon ball, unless he escaped (debatable).
Trivia[]
- This is one of the rare times the starring character dies first.
- The title is a pun on the term "batten down the hatches", which means to secure a ship's hatches before a storm approaches.
- Scurvy endures a similar fate to the one from Yarr'd Sale.
